Frühlingsgefühle

Finally I find the time to da a post on my wardrobe plans for spring. After Colette Patterns sparked the fire on spring palettes this is much on my mind and as it seems on many other bloggers minds, too.

My colours this spring are navy, red and off-white.

The items are (in order of need): underwear, jeans, jacket/blazer, matching skirt, top. This is a very ambitioned plan, because as you know me perhaps a little by now, I'm not one for the big output. At least I finished alredy a knit top that fits in there really well. And there are 4 panties waiting to get the elastic attached and then they'd be finished, too. The fabric for the rest is sitting around prewashed since autumn, so I hope I will be a good girl and have a couple of new pieces to add to my travel luggage in late may...

Endlich komme ich mal zu meinem Frühlingspost. Nachdem bei Colette Patterns Frühlingspaletten und Nähprojekte noch und nöcher zu sehen waren, habe ich auch einen Plan beizusteuern.

Meine Farben für dieses Frühjahr sind marine, rot und eierschale. Verteilt auf folgende Kleidungsstücke (in Reihenfolge der Dringlichkeit): Unterwäsche, Jeans, Jacke/Blazer, passender Rock und (mindestens) ein Oberteil. Ein Oberteil habe ich schon fertig gestrickt und an 4 Unterhosen fehlt nur noch der Gummi. Das heißt, obwohl das für jemanden mit einem so geringen Output wie mich eine sehr ambitionierte Liste ist, könnte ich das vielleicht sogar schaffen. Immerhin habe ich auch schon alle Stoffe und die sind sogar vorgewaschen. Also hoffe ich mal das beste für neue Teile in meinem Reiserucksack Ende Mai...

nähen?

Momentan wird hier nicht genäht. Ich habe kein aktuelles Projekt und finde das selbst ganz komisch. Ich denke, das liegt daran, dass ich gerade eher in der Stimmung bin auszumisten, als mehr Dinge hinzuzufügen. Ich habe eben einfach nicht das Bedürfnis nach einem bestimmten Kleidungsstück, von dem ich das Gefühl habe, es zu brauchen als Motivation.

Vielleicht ist das auch eine der Auswirkungen des SSS. Ich setze mich mehr mit den Dingen auseinander, die ich habe. Ich benutze einen bestimmten Teil meiner Garderobe regelmäßig (nämlich den selbst gemachten) und kombiniere den Rest "drumherum". Und es funktioniert. Ich mag das, was ich auf den Bildern sehe.

Außerdem denke ich, mein guter Vorsatz für dieses Jahr - selfish crafting, also jeden Monat ein Kleidungsstück für mich zu machen, hat seinen Anteil daran. Ich habe meinen Output sehr erhöht und die bisher empfundenen Lücken geschlossen. Ich bin mit meinen Klamotten zufrieden. Ich werde mich also demnächst daran machen Dinge zu reparieren oder Sachen zu nähen, die gebrauchte Sachen ersetzen (z.B. ist demnächst ne neue Jeans fällig) oder für die ich schon Stoff habe.

Beim Stricken ist das lustigerweise anders, es gibt eine Menge Sachen, die ich haben/machen will. Aber das liegt vielleicht auch an der Jahreszeit. ;) Wenn es erst richtig auf den Winter zu geht, kommt vielleicht auch mein Näh-Mojo wieder...

I'm not sewing at the moment. I don't have a current project and even I think this is weird. I'm rather in a mood to throw away than add new things. I just don't have this "must have" feeling for a piece that motivates me.

Perhaps this is a result of SSS. I am forced to think more about the clothes I already own. I have to use part of my wardrobe on a regular basis (the self stitched one) and combine the rest around this core. And it works. I really like what I see on the pictures.

I also think that my resolution for this year to craft selfishly has it's share, too. I increased my output decidedly and closed the gaps in my wardrobe. I finally like what's in there. There is nothing I covet. So in the near future there will be mending, sewing clothes to replace old ones (e.g. a new pair of jeans) or things I already have fabric for.

It's a different case with my knitting, though. There are a lot of things I want to make. But this might be also a seasonal problem. Perhaps my sewing mojo will come back once winter is approaching for real.

Herbstliche Handschuhe

Die Lacy Gloves gehen voran. Es ist immer noch etwas ungewohnt für mich, Handschuhe flach zu stricken, aber ich muss ehrlich sagen, es hat auch Vorteile. Ich muss nicht so oft auf die nächste Nadel wechseln, was die Sache beschleunigt & ab und zu auch linke Maschen zu stricken ist auch ganz schön. Das Zusammennähen wird mich bestimmt etwas nerven, aber davon bin ich noch ein ganzes Stück entfernt. Momentan habe ich den linken Handschuh schon fast fertig - nur der kleine Finger und ein Teil des Ringfingers fehlen noch.

My Lacy Gloves are progressing well. It's still a bit unusual for me to knit gloves flat, but I am warming to the benefits: having to switch needles less often speeds things up a bit and purling from time to time is also nice. Sewing them together is something that will be a chore, but I'm not there yet. At the moment I have finished most of the left glove, 1.5 fingers are still missing.

Fertig!

Endlich ist meine grüne Strickjacke fertig! Das Einnähen des Reißverschlusses mit der Hand hat letztendlich nur einen ganzen Abend vorm Fernseher gedauert. Und jetzt ist sie fertig :) Hier schon mal ein paar ganz unbeholfen geschossene Fotos. Das ist schon mein zweites fertiges Projekt für mich diesen Monat, ich bin beeindruckt.

I finished my green cardigan! Sewing in the zipper by hand did only take one long evening in front of the TV. And now it's finished! :) Let's celebrate with some wobbely badly lighted pics I made. As this is the second finished garnment for me this month I'm really impressed and happy.

Turbo-Projekt

Ich habe innerhalb eines Abends eine neue Hose für meinen Pilates-Kurs genäht. Ich bin echt begeistert! Am längsten dauerten dabei meine zwei selbstgemachten Stolpersteine: Nr.1 - den Schnitt finden und Nr.2 vor lauter Energie die falsche Naht mit der Ovi nähen und dann mühsam wieder auftrennen.

Bei Nr. 1 gebe ich burda allerdings eine Teilschuld. Ich habe eine geschlagene halbe Stunde nach den Schnittbögen aus der Ausgabe 11/2006 gesucht. Ich habe die Bögen aus der Zeit alle zusammen in einem Ordner und ich konnte ihn weder dort noch sonst irgendwo in meinen Näh-Kisten und Umschlägen finden...bis ich das Nähanleitungsheft zuklappte und feststellte, dass es sich gar nicht um burda 11/2006 handelte, sondern um burda 11/2007! Den Schnitt hatte ich schon ein paar mal in der Hand. Zurückgeblättert zur Modellbeschreibung - in der Fußzeile steht burda 11/2006!!!! Einmal kurz durchgeblättert offenbarte das Heft nach wenigen richtigen Fußzeilen auf den meisten Seiten einen Zeitsprung um ein Jahr in die Vergangenheit. Holzauge, sei wachsam!

Ansonsten war das Nähen ein Traum. Der Stoff, ein Singlejersey aus 95% Baumwolle und 5% Elastan, ließ gut nähen und machte keine Zicken. Den Schnitt habe ich schon beim kopieren auf ein gerades Bein angepasst und dann nach der ersten Anprobe für meine Bleistiftbeinchen noch mal je 2cm von jeder Seitennaht entfernt neu genäht. Den Bund habe ich aus Bündchenstoff genäht und die Säume unversäubert gelassen. Die Länge ist gut und Singlejersey rollt sich so schön.

Voila, kombiniert mit dem roten T-Shirt ein SSS-Outfit für die morgige Pilates-Stunde. :)

I have made a pair of new pilates-pants in only one evening. I'm so proud! The biggest time eaters have been my two selfmade stumblestones: Nr. 1 - trying to find the pattern sheets and Nr. 2 sewing the pieces together the wrong way with a serger and having to rip the thing out again.

With Nr. 1, I have to say, that I think burda is partly to blame there, too. I spend half an hour looking for those pattern sheets of burda 11/2006. First in my pattern folder, later every where sewing stuff can possibly be in my room. Nothing. Until I shut close the little magazine with the sewing instructions and it claimed to be from burda 11/2007! I had come acrosse those pattern sheets quite a few times during my search. I looked back at the page with the instructions for the pants - bottom line says burda 11/2006. Thumbing through the thing it seems most pages make this little jump back in time. Thank you burda proof readers.

Detail Bündchen/ribbing & Jersey

Otherwise sewing was a dream. The fabric, a single jersey containing 95% cotton and 5% spandex, was easy to sew. I already tapered the pattern to a straight leg when copying it. After the first fitting I decided to make a new seam 2cm inwards from the side seam. This took out almost all the curviness of the pattern that is there to accomodate thighs - which are a feature I just came without. I used ribbing to make the waistband and left the hems unfinished as I really like the way single jersey rolls and the length is nice.

Selfish Crafting - August

hui, ich habe es gestern tatsächlich noch geschafft 8 schicke Knopflöcher zu nähen und 8 Knöpfe zu beziehen und anzunähen. Ich schwankte noch kurz, ob ich Knopflöcher und/oder Knöpfe weiß machen sollte, aber ich habe mich spontan für die sichere Alternative entschieden. Das heißt: die Bluse ist endlich fertig. Und das April-Wetter passt ja auch wieder für eine langärmelige Bluse. Zu guter letzt wirft dieses Projekt noch mal ein Tutorial ab: ich habe endlich eine Möglichkeit gefunden die kleinen Prym-Knöpfe gleichmäßig und ohne ausgefranste Ränder zu beziehen...

hui, I have been a really good girl yesterday and I did 8 beautiful button holes and made 8 fabric covered buttons and attached them. I hasitated a bit when I thought about the possibility of making the button holes and/or the button in white, but I swiftly went for the save option and here we are: a finished blouse. And the weather is like April again. How matching. And for a last time there will be a tutorial based on this blouse coming soon: I finally found a method for covering Prym buttons nicely and without fraying, so I thought I'd share.

Ich habe eine Menge gelernt bei diesem Projekt: Knöpfe beziehen, französische Nähte, mit Chiffon zu arbeiten. So langsam verliere ich auch den Respekt vor Blusen. Vielleicht nähe ich nach dem Schnitt noch mal eine. Dann aber mit breiteren Manschetten, dann bauscht sich der Ärmel noch schöner. Ich habe so lange an der Bluse gearbeitet, ich werde mich noch etwas dran gewöhnen müssen, dass sie jetzt wirklich fertig ist. Aber da wird der SSS bestimmt helfen. Und hoffentlich auch beim unangenehmen Posen vorm Spiegel. Kennt Ihr das, wenn man sich so daran gewöhnt hat, das etwas wip ist, dass es ne Weile dauert bis man es tatsächlich trägt?

I did learn a lot on this project: covering buttons, doing french seams and working with chiffon. I slowly am getting comfortable sewing blouses. Perhaps I will even sew another one based on this pattern. But this would have taller cuffs, so the sleeves would be puffier and even more beautiful.
I worked so long on this blouse that it will take me a bit to realize it's finally wearable. But SSS will help me with this a lot, I guess. And also hopefully with posing and feeling weird in front of the mirror. Do you know this, too? When it takes a time for a long time wip after finishing to get recognized as garnment?

Zurück in die Zukunft

Heute Abend habe ich schweren Herzens die Entscheidung getroffen, den 10 Reihen vor seiner Vollendung stehenden Ärmel der grünen Strickjacke aufzutrennen. Und zwar bis zum Ellenbogen. Beide Ärmel sind damit gleich lang und die Arbeit einer Woche ist dahin...

Der Ärmel war einfach zu viel eng. Bis zum Ellenbogen war noch alles in bester Ordnung, aber dann fühlte es sich wie ein Druckverband an. Dabei waren meine Abnahmen gleichmäßig verteilt, was beim Stricken ja die gängige Methode ist. Und genau bei dem Gedanken machte es Klick: beim Konstruieren eines Ärmels hat man keine gleichmäßige Schräge, sondern eine stärkere Abnahme bis zum Ellenbogen und weniger bis keine danach. Normalerweise macht das beim Stricken wahrscheinlich keinen Unterschied, aber mit so einem körperbetonten Schnitt und dazu einem stark raffenden Zopf muss ich mich wohl nicht wundern.

Also ist der neue Plan bis zum Bündchen mehr Maschen zu behalten und die dadurch geringeren Abnahmen neu zu verteilen. Die restlichen Maschen nehme ich dann beim Bündchen ab (das Bündchen war locker genug). Dadurch komme ich jetzt von Abnahmen in jeder 7. auf jede 12. Reihe. Mal sehen, wie das funktioniert. Wieso die ganze Mehrarbeit? Darum: Denn wenn ich eins im letzten Jahr über mich gelernt habe, dann, dass ich keine Sachen trage, die nicht richtig passen. Auch nicht, wenn ich noch so viel Arbeit hinein gesteckt habe. Einen Schritt zurück zu machen, bringt mich einem wirklich tragbarem Kleidungsstück eben näher.

hello again

Tonight I finally came to the decision to unravel the sleeve of the green cardigan that was just 10 rows away from completition. I undid it up to the elbow which is exactly the length the other one has and that's it for one weeks worth of knitting.


The sleeve was just tooooo tight. Much so. It was fitting nicely from set in point tp elbow. Below it felt a bit blood restraining. All my decreases were evenly distributed which is state of the art with knitting. And this thought made it klick: in construction for sewn garnments there is a bigger decrease on the upper arm and much less if even on the lower arm. Usually this doesn't matter with stretchy knitting but with such a fitted design and a cable that eats a lot of width there might be something to it.


So I plan on keeping more stitches on my needles until I come to the ribbing and spacing the fewer decreases anew. The ribbing itself was lose enough so the  rest of the decreases will be made there. So I will now be decreasing in every 12th row instead of in every 7th. I'm really interested in how this will work out. Why am I doing all this? Simple answer: I learned about myself in the last year that I won't wear anything that doesn't fit. No matter how much work I put in it. So going back will make sure of me wearing it in the future. 

Kleinigkeiten

Es gibt an der Handarbeitsfront einen kleinen Fortschritt zu berichten: Ich habe es endlich geschafft an meiner blauen Bluse die Manschetten anzunähen!

Außerdem habe ich an der hinteren Mitte meines blauen gepunkteten Kleides insgesamt 5cm vom Ausschnitt heraus genommen. Die Träger rutschten beim Tragen einfach ständig, weil dort zu viel Weite war. :)

There is small progress to note in my crafting endeavour: I finally attached cuffs to the sleeves of the blue blouse started in April!


I also took 5cm ease out of the back neckline of my blue dotted dress. The straps tended to slide off my shoulders because of the ease. :)

Wochenrückblick

Das Kleid ist fertig! :) Ich habe es pünktlich gestern (am 30.) geschafft. Damit ist es mein fertig gestelltes Teil für August & ich konnte es gleich zum Geburtstags-Pick-Nick einer Freundin auch gleich ausführen. Das Wetter hat nämlich großartigerweise auch mitgespielt. Zum Frisbee- und Kubbspielen hatte erstmal die dunkelblaue Seite Premiere, die helle wird wohl noch etwas warten müssen.

I finished my dress! :) Right in time on the 30th. So it is my officially my finished piece for August and I could wear it to a birthday picknick of a friend. The weather was perfect for it. For playing frisbee and kubb the dark blue side of the dress had it's turn, but as you know, there is a fair one biding it's time.

Und jetzt der Ausblick: was kommt als nächstes? Zum einen muss ich mein blaues Kleid mit Punkten ändern, das Rückenteil ist einfach zu weit wenn ich grade stehe. Dann wartet da noch eine Bluse auf Fertigstellung und ein roter Pünktchenstoff darauf ein Kleid zu werden. Wieder burdastyle 5/2010 Nr. 110, wie mein schwarzes Kleid. Die Frage ist, lohnt es sich noch ein Sommerkleid zu nähen? Denn der Sommer ist ja bald vorbei. Andererseits dürfte es ja mal etwas schneller gehen, da das ja mal ein schon getester/geänderter Schnitt ist und ich mit ihm jetzt etwas Erfahrung habe. Nächste Woche werde ich wahrscheinlich eh nicht zum Nähen kommen, also werde ich sehen, wonach mir danach der Sinn steht.

So what's next? First there is an alteration I have to make to my blue polkadotted dress, the back is too wide if I stand upright. There also is a blouse waiting to be finished and red polkadotted fabric waiting to be turned into a dress. Again a burdastyle 5/2010 Nr. 110, like my black dress. The obvious question is: is it really clever to sew a summerdress when summer is almost over? On the other hand sewing it should be quite fast as it is an already tested/altered pattern and I have a little expierence now with it. Next week is already so full that there won't be any time to sew a little, we'll see what will be on my mind afterwards.

Kappt die Leinen!

Vorher/Before

Ich habe eine Nacht drüber geschlafen und muss zugeben, die Idee die Nähte des Leinenkleids unversäubert zu lassen, gefiel mir immer weniger. Es sah halt einfach nicht aus. Also nahm ich mir zum Frühstück ein altes Nähbuch zur Hand, um zu sehen, welche Alternativen es vielleicht gäbe. Und ich fand eine Antwort: eine Kappnaht! Heute hauptsächlich von Jeans und anderen sportlichen Kleidungsstücken gewohnt, empfahl das gute Buch diese Naht damals für Wäsche (= feiner Stoff + starke Beanspruchung). BINGO! Es sieht gleich um längen besser aus.

I slept over it and changed my mind: I just didn't like the sight of the unfinished seam allowance shimmering through. It looked worse each time I saw the pieces. So I took an old sewing book with me to the breakfast table and thumbed through the pages looking for alternatives. And there was an answer to my problems: a lap-felled seam! Today commonly seen on jeans and other sporty gear, this good book recommended them for linen/underwear (= fine fabric + heavy wear). BINGO! It's looking so much better now.

Nachher/After

Für den dunkelblauen Teil des Kleids bin ich der Meinung, dass ich die Nahtzugaben zu einer Seite bügeln werde und dann knappkantig mit naturfarbenen Garn absteppe. Diese Steppung werde ich auch benutzen, um die Falten im Rock 10cm, weit zuzusteppen. Das dunkelblaue Rockteil wird etwas kürzer als das helle, dann macht die Farbe auch Sinn und es sieht vielleicht sogar etwas maritim aus. :)

The dark blue part of the dress will have it's allowances pressed to the side and do a narrow topstitch in a natural colour like I will do with the pleats of the skirt for 10 cm. I plan to make the blue skirt shorter than the linen one so the topstitching colour will make sense and with a little luck it might look nautical. :)

Wochenrückblick

Nach der ersten Anprobe des Nesselteils, das gar nicht so übel war, habe ich gestern noch kurz vor Ladenschluss einen Abstecher zum Karstadt gemacht. Der Stoff ist einfach zu transparent, um nicht gefüttert zu werden und weiß schluckt das Muster. Batist in einer dunklen Farbe (bevorzugt dunkelblau - Vorschlag meines Mitbewohners) musste her und ein Reißverschluss. Gedacht getan. Leider gab es nur weißen Batist, deshalb ist der Futterstoff jetzt etwas steifere Baumwolle. Der wurde gestern auch noch schnell gewaschen...

After trying on the not-so-bad-looking muslin yesterday afternoon, I raced to the next fabric shop before it closed for the weekend. The fabric is too sheer not to use a lining and white is sucking up all the details of the fabric pattern. Batiste in a dark colour (great idea of my flatmate!) and a zipper had to be conjured up. Thought - done. Unfortunately there was only white batiste to be had, so I took a stiffer cotton in the right colour, which I also washed it last evening.

Schnittänderungen/pattern adjustments

Heute morgen vorm Frühstück gleich der zweite Versuch in Nessel fürs Oberteil. Ich hatte die Büstennaht abgeflacht und die mittleren Teile mit den oberen Teilen verbunden (das streckt etwas mehr). Das saß schon verdammt gut, noch mal die Büstennaht abgeflacht und dann ging es nach dem Frühstück ans Zuschneiden. Das hat dann gute 2 Stunden gedauert. Nahtlinien übertragen war auch noch mal ne Geduldsprobe (ich will nähen!). Dann endlich Nähen: die Oberteile in Oberstoff und Futter sind zusammengesetzt und gebügelt. Ich werde die Nahtzugaben unversäubert lassen, weil ich Angst habe, dass sie sich sonst durchdrücken. Außerdem spiele ich ganz stark mit dem Gedanken das Kleid so zu nähen, dass ich es von beiden Seiten tragen kann. Zwei Fliegen mit einer Klappe sozusagen.

This morning even before breakfast I did the second muslin for the bodice. I had  flattened the curve of the bust a bit and melted the middle and upper bodice parts to make it appear longer. This was working quite well so after flattening the curve even a bit more I started cutting. This was a work of two houres and copying the lines were a bit trying on my nerves as well (I want to sew!) Then finally I started sewing. The outer and inner bodices are both assembled and ironed. I won't finish the seam allowances as I fear they will press through. And, ahem, I am toying with the idea of making this dress reversible. Two in one...

Kurzes Update zur Strickjacke: ich bin mit den Zunahmen für den Brustumfang fertig und habe gestern die "Abnäher" gestrickt. Meine ersten! Es ging wesentlich einfacher als gedacht, es sind halt doch nur verkürzte Reihen...

Short update on my green cardigan: I finished increasing for the bust and did the "darts" yesterday. My first time! They went so smooth, as they are just short rows, but what an effect!

Wir haben einen Gewinner

Als erstes wird der Leinenstoff zu einem Kleid verarbeitet. Und zwar zu dieser schicken burda-Version:
The fabric that is the first to be picked is the linen. It's going to be this dress:

burda 05/2007  Modell 124 (Gibt es auch als Einzelschnitt. Wenn ich mich nicht irre 7829). Denn die Temperaturen hier werden wohl auch noch die nächsten Wochen in unglaublichen Höhen bleiben. 30°C fühlen sich allmählich kühl an!

It's burda 07/2007 number 124 (It is also sold as a seperate pattern. If I am not totally wrong it's the same as 7829). The weather gave the final push in this direction as it's not going to cool down here much. 30°C actually start feeling fresh and cooling!

Der Schnitt ist kopiert und ich habe eine FBA gemacht. Die wird bei dem Büstenteil aber bestimmt nicht reichen. Deshalb kommt als nächstes ein Nesselmodell zur Probe... Auch um zu sehen, ob ich diese Art Schnitt wirklich tragen kann.

I already copied the pattern pieces and made an FBA. I fear that this will not be the end because of the very fitted bust of this dress. So a muslin of the bodice is up next. Also to see if I can really pull of this style. 

Wochenrückblick

Meine Nähmaschine ist immer noch nicht wieder da. Und obwohl das eigentlich "nur" bedeutet, dass kein ZickZack mehr möglich ist, denn ich habe ja immer noch meine Ovi und die Geradstichmaschine meiner Oma, bin ich in einer Art Nähblockade.
My sewing mashine is still in the workshop. And though this really only means that I am without ZigZagStitches, because I still have my overlock and my grannys straightstitch mashine, I am in a kind of sewers block.

Denn die große Frage, die mich grad umtreibt, ist folgende: wie geht's weiter? Nähe ich Sommersachen passend zur unglaublichen Hitze hier oder bin ich mal ausnahmsweise gut vorbereitet und überlege, was ich im Herbst brauchen werde und fange an mich darauf vorzubereiten. Immerhin spiele ich immer noch mit dem Gedanken beim Self Stitched September mitzumachen und im September nur (oder mindestens täglich ein) selbstgenähtes Kleidungsstück zu tragen. Da wäre etwas Planung hilfreich. Und während ich so tippe ist mir schon fast klar, dass die Motivation eher in Richtung Sommer geht...nur dass ich auch hier nicht so wirklich einen Plan habe im Moment.

Aber offenbar bin ich da nicht die einzige, Susannah von cargo cult craft sprach mir mit Ihrem Artikel, der verschiedene Diskussionen über Körperform, Vintagesilhouetten und Stil aufgriff aus der Seele. Also was kommt als nächstes in meine Sommergarderobe?

Ein Kleid - basierend auf dem gleichen Schnitt, wie das schwarze, diesmal mit Knopfleiste aus rotem Viskose mit weißen Punkten,
die Leinenhose, sie muss eigentlich nur neu zusammengefügt werden,
ein Rock oder Kleid aus teilweise transparent gemustertem Leinen,
ein schwarzes Oberteil aus dem letzten Rest schwarzem Leinen/Viskose,
ein Oberteil aus dem dunkelblauen Baumwollbatist mit roten Punkten, mit dem ich eigentlich meine Jacke füttern wollte?

Und das sind nur die Sachen, die ich aus meinem Vorrat nähen könnte. Oh my!

The big question at the moment is: what comes next? Will I sew some summery clothes that go along with the unbelievable heat out there or am I a good girl once in a while an plan my autumn wardrobe and start sewing for this on time. I still plan to take part in Self Stitched September and wear at least one self stitched item per day. So planning would be helpful. And while I'm typing I get the feeling my motivation turns very definitely to summer...only I don't have a plan what I need here, too.

But it seems that I am not the only one. Susannah of cargo cult craft wonderfully summend up different discussions on body image, vintage silhouettes and style and spoke right to my heart. So what is the next addition to my summer wardrobe?


A dress - based on the same pattern as the black one this time with button-up front, in red rayon with white polka dots,
the linen trousers, they just have to be reassembled basically,
a skirt or dress made with partly transparent patterned linen,
a black top made of the last remains of the black linen/rayon,
a top made of the navy cotton batiste with tiny red dots, that should originally line a plannes jacket?


And this is only what I could make from my stash. Oh my!

Das Grüne Monster

Weil ich mir in den Kopf gesetzt hatte, dass die grüne Strickjacke mein Urlaubsprojekt sein sollte, musste ich mich endlich entscheiden. Nachdem ich im Casting das Probeknäuel 2x komplett mit verschiedenen Zöpfen und Ranken strapaziert hatte, wurde das auch langsam mal Zeit. Die Wahl für den schmalen Zopf fiel auf einen 2teiligen aus 6 rechten Maschen und die "breite Ranke" wird von einem 3teiligen Zopf (je 5 Maschen) dargestellt. Des weiteren ein 2rechts/2links Bündchen und eine Konstruktion von unten nach oben in einem Stück. Ob Reißverschluss oder nicht, weiß ich immer noch nicht genau, also werde ich die Blenden später anstricken je nachdem ob RV oder Knöpfe...

As I was convinced that the green cardigan was destined to be my holiday knitting project, I finally had to make a decision. After I knitted through my test ball twice allready in the process of making up my mind it was high time. And the winners are: a 2part 6 stitch cable as slim cable and the "broad twine" is going to be interpreted by a 3part cable (each 5 stitches wide). We also have a 2 by 2 rib and the body is going to be constructed seamless. I still haven't decided if i want to close it with a zip or buttons so I will knit the bands last.

Wochenrückblick

Der Wochenrückblick fällt dieses Mal etwas kürzer aus. Denn offensichtlich habe ich zwar eine Menge genäht, aber auch ne Menge drüber geschrieben. Mehr gibt es diese Woche nicht ;).
Das Kleid hatte übrigens gestern Abend seinen ersten Auftritt. Es war zwar eigentlich etwas zu kühl, aber dagegen halfen Strumpfhosen und eine dreiviertelarm Bluse. Hmpf, ich hätte vielleicht ein Foto machen sollen...

The dress had it's first outing yesterday. It's been a bit cold here (again) but tights and a blouse did help making it warm enough. Hmpf, I should have thought of taking a picture...

My Frock by Friday - 4. Tag

ich bin bleich & geschafft aber glücklich

Es ist soweit - das Kleid ist fertig :)

It's friday and I finished my dress!

Heute habe ich nur noch die rechte Seitennaht am Rock gesteppt und versäubert. Dann die Rockbahn an das Oberteil und schließlich den Nahtreißverschluss ein genäht. Das geht inzwischen erstaunlich gut. Besonders, seit ich herausgefunden habe, dass die Versäuberung mit der Ovi genau 5mm breit ist und damit die ideale gerade Stoßkante für den Reißverschluss bietet. (Meine Nahtzugaben sind 15mm breit.) Dann noch etwas drauf geachtet, dass sich der Stoff nicht dehnt beim Nähen, dann wellt sich auch nichts.

Today I only had to do the right side seam on the skirt, attach the skirt to the bodice and finally sew in the invisible zipper. This worked out inncredibly well. Especially since I found out that the finishing of my overlock mashine is exactly 5mm wide which is the ideal straight edge for the zipper when using 15mm seam allowances. I checked double that the fabric isn't stretched when sewing in the zip and no puckering did happen.

Dann gab es erstmal eine Pause, bis ich einen meiner Mitbewohner dazu bewegen konnte, mir den Rock abzustecken. Denn die Saumlinie war wegen der unterschiedlichen Dehnbarkeit des Stoffes je nach Fadenlauf alles andere als parallel zum Boden. Der einzige (kleine) Nachteil eines Tellerrocks. Um den Rock heute gleich säumen zu können, hingen die Rockteile seit dem Zuschnitt am Dienstag an einen Bügel geklammert. Hier sieht man ganz gut, was passiert, auch wenn die Qualität des Fotos zu wünschen übrig lässt: an den Außenkanten ist der Fadenlauf gerade=nicht dehnbar, in der Mitte des Rocks ist der Fadenlauf diagonal=maximale Dehnbarkeit. Schade, dass sich die Außenkanten nicht mit gedehnt haben, die Länge vorn (immerhin 7cm mehr) war auch sehr schick.


Then I had to wait for one of my flatmates to help me mark the hemline. Even though I had marked and cut my skirt very accuratly, the hemline was very uneven. The only (small) disadvantage of a circular skirt. I had it on a hanger since cutting it on tuesday so it had already a chance to stretch out till today. Here is a good picture of what happened (even though the picture could be better): on the outer edges the grain is straight=no stretch, in the middle the grain is on the bias = maximum stretch.

Also wurde der Saum vorm Anpfiff abgesteckt, in der Halbzeitpause zugeschnitten und versäubert. Während der 2. Halbzeit umgesteckt und direkt nach dem doch noch spannenden 1:1 genäht. Wir haben WM!

So the hemline was marked with pins just before the tingler and cut and secured  in the half time break. Folded and pinned during second half and sewn directly after the finally enthralling 1:1. It's World Championship time! 

Urteil: I liebe es! Es passt wie angegossen und steht mir. Ich bin total glücklich und stolz, die Motivation zusammengekratzt zu haben, das Kleid in so kurzer Zeit durch zu ziehen. Das heißt, ich werde es tragen, bis es auseinanderfällt und vielleicht noch ein zweites nähen... es wartet da noch so ein roter Pünktchenstoff aus Viscose darauf ein Kleid zu werden.

Verdict: I love it! It fits like a glove and looks great on me. I am so happy and proud  I found enough motivation to make it. It will be worn to death and I probably will make another one in a different fabric. This time perhaps with the button band. There is a cute red polka dot viscose fabric in my stash waiting to be a dress...

My Frock by Friday - 3. Tag

Wow, Tag drei war bis jetzt am anstrengendsten. Nicht nur, weil es viel zu nähen war, sondern auch, weil ich mal wieder nicht den Schnitt so lassen konnte, wie er ist... außerdem mag meine Nähmaschine nicht mehr so, wie ich es möchte. Aber der Reihe nach:

Wow, day 3 hass been the most stressful so far. Not only a lot to sew, but also me altering construction once again...and in addition to that my sewing maschine gave up. But one after the other:

Ich habe die vorderen Mittelteile an die vorderen Steitenteile gesteppt und festgestellt, dass ich aus irgendeinem Grund das mittlere Vorderteil im Probeteil breiter gemacht hatte, als der Schnitt war. Keine Ahnung, wie das passieren konnte!!! Also habe ich erstmal mit nem üblen Gefühl in der Magengegend weitergenäht und dann die vorderen Mitten geheftet um zu sehen, was ich machen kann. Überraschenderweise passte es (wenn auch praktisch ohne Spiel). Und die Mittelnaht gefiel mir besser als eine Knopfleiste. Also habe ich die vordere Mitte zusammengenäht. Das führte allerdings zu einer unglaublichen Fummelei mit den angeschnittenen Belegen. Die wollte ich aber behalten, weil die sich die Falten unter Zug unschön aufstellten. Grrr. Warum einfach???

I did sew the front middle sections to the front sides as I noticed that I had made this part bigger than the pattern suggests in the muslin. I have no idea how this has happened!!! So I carried on with a slightly bad feeling in my stomach and basted the center fronts together to see what I could do. Surprisingly it did fit (even with next to no room) and I liked the center front seem a lot more than buttons. So I sewed the center front close. This opened up a whole range of new problems that were only to be solved with major fumbling around as I wanted to keep the facings to avoid pulling on the pleats. Grr. Why can't I keep it nice AND simple?

Bei der Anprobe merkte ich, dass der Ausschnitt hinten einfach viel zu weit abstand. Deshalb habe ich noch schnell zwei Schulterabnäher eingefügt (je 2 x 10 cm), das hat die Passform gleich unglaublich verbessert.

When trying on I also notices that the neckline was to wide at the back. So I improvised two shoulder darts (each 2 x 10 cm) which improved the overall fitting amazingly.

Das Verstürzen mit Schrägstreifen ging nach kurzem Rumprobieren ganz gut. Dazu kommt gleich noch ein kleines Tutorial. Auf der Zielgeraden beim Versäubern des Ausschnitts gab es dann noch einen lauten Knall und Ober- sowie Unterfadenspannung hatten sich verabschiedet. Die Unterfadenspannung konnte ich mit einem Schraubenzieher wieder beheben. Für die Oberfadenspannung blieb nur den Faden über den kleinen Knopf zum Aufspulen zu führen. Es hat funktioniert. Ich fürchte nächste Woche muss mein Schatz zur Reparatur. :(

At least the hemming of the arm and neck openings with bias tape worked quite well. I will document it with a small tutorial later. Just before finishing the last bias binding there was a loud bang and my upper and lower thread tension were gone to hell. Completely! The lower thread tension was easily fixed with a screw driver but with the upper thread tension I had to improvise and run the thread through the little thing that regulates the tension when spooling. So I fear I have to part with my darling next week to have it repaired.

My Frock by Friday - 2. Tag

Heute habe ich es etwas ruhiger angehen lassen und nur 2 Stündchen in das Kleid investiert. In denen habe ich zuerst die Fältchen im mittleren Vorderteil abgesteppt. Das war schon eine ziemliche Fummelei, aber es lohnt sich. Vor allem bin ich froh, dass ich mir letzte Woche einen neuen Nahttrenner gegönnt habe, denn ich musste die eine oder andere korrigieren.

Today I relaxed a bit and only sewed for 2 houres on the dress. First I made the small pleats for the center front. This has been a good bit of fumbling around, but totally worth the hassle. Mainly I am so glad I bought a new keyhole cutter last week, because I had to redo some of them.

Außerdem habe ich, solange es noch relativ kühl war, die Einlage auf den Beleg fürs Mittelteil und Nahtband auf die Ausschnittkanten von Arm und Hals gebügelt.

I also ironed the interlining on the facings of the center front pieces and seam tape to the neck and arm openings.

Mit etwas Glück gibt es morgen schon etwas, dass als Kleidoberteil erkennbar ist.
Hopefully tomorrow there will be something recogniseable as a dress bodice.

A Frock by Friday

In letzter Zeit verfolge ich sehnsüchtig Grosgrain. Kathleen, die Autorin des Blogs, hatte die großartige Idee zu "A frock by friday". Dabei entsteht innerhalb von 5 Tagen ein Kleid. Sie stellt jeden Tag die die einzelnen Schritte (mit Fotos) vor, die dann bis zum Wochenende zum Ergebnis führen.


I got a lot of inspiration lately from Grosgrain. The lovely author Kathleen invented "A frock by friday". It's a sew-along of one dress in 5 days. She breaks the instructions up in steps for each day and documents them always with pictures.


Und da hier das kalte regnerische Wetter plötzlich vom Hochsommer abgelöst wurde, fiel mir auf, dass ich dringend ein kühles Sommerkleid aus Leinen für die Arbeit brauche! Die Wahl für den Schnitt fiel schon vor einiger Zeit auf burda Nr. 5/2010 Nr. 110, wie hier gepostet. Und so hab ich mich entschlossen meine eigene kleine Doku hier zu starten.


As rainy and cool weather was replaced here with blazing summer I realized that I needed a cool linen summer dress for work asap! So before I have to go there again on friday I hope to have a dress to wear. The chosen pattern is from burda Nr. 5/2010 Nr. 110 like posted here. So I decided to have my own little sew-along just for me ;).

Heute habe ich das Schnittmuster kopiert, es verlängert (es ist eine Kurzgröße und ich bräcuhte eigentlich das Gegenteil) und eine FBA gemacht. Das habe ich mit einem Probeteil noch mal nachgebessert (und mich gegen die Flatterärmelchen entschieden). Das hat ganze 3 Stunden gebraucht, das Zuschneiden des Stoffs dann noch mal 2.


So today I copied the pattern, made it longer (it's petite and I am definitely not) and an FBA. I also made a muslin for the bodice to be sure. I had this done in about three houres. The cutting of the fabric took another two.

Wochenrückblick

Letzte Woche habe ich mir ein Herz gefasst und immerhin die Ärmelschlitze an der Bluse genäht und den vorgewaschenen Batist gebügelt.

Das sollte der Post sein und ist nun der Beweis, dass das Bloggen mich wirklich motiviert! Ich habe den Satz gelesen und drüber nachgedacht, was ich noch dazu schreiben könnte und war in nullkommanix hinter der Nähmaschine.

Nach 1,5 Stunden nächtlichen Nähens kann ich jetzt stolz verkünden, dass auch die Ärmelnähte fertig sind. Es gibt nun ein paar Fotos für ein Tutorial über Französische Nähte, die Kragennähte sind fertig und der Kragen ist auch schon an die Bluse geheftet. Außerdem habe ich endlich die richtige Einstellung für den nervigen Chiffon gefunden - die Oberfadenspannung auf 1 runtergeregelt lässt das Wellen der Naht verschwinden. Ich bin stolz.

Last week I actually managed to sew the sleeve slits (cuff slits?) and iron the cotton batiste I pre-washed.


That was supposed to be my post and now is the prove that blogging here really motivates me! I read what I wrote, thought hard if there was anything more I could include and was off to my sewing mashine!!!


After almost 1.5 houres of late work night sewing I can now proudly tell that also the sleeve seams are finished. There are a few night time photos for a small french seam tutorial, the collar seams are finished and it has been basted to the body. And finally I found the perfect settings for the annoying chiffon - turning the upper thread tension down to 1. I am proud :).
