Knitting and Crochet time / Zeit zu Stricken


While this post gets published I'm enjoying some of my favorite knitting times and surroundings: I sit in a train and watch the landscape flying by. It's really wonderful and peaceful. Usually I have my iPod with me and listen to music or even more often to cast on. Brendy Dayne's soothing voice is relaxing on it's own. Combined it's crafting heaven.


I'm also guilty of being a TV knitter. It's something I inherited from my mum. We are both rather restless and just sitting in front of a tv and not doing anything else is seldom heard of. It also works the other way around, if I have to finish a knit, I watch a film to keep me in the mood. Although it is also lovely to chat to someone while knitting, I find it rather difficult, as I use my hands a lot while talking. I'm able to do it, it's just not me. ;)

Während dieser Post online erscheint, bin ich weit weg von meinem Computer und freue mich über ein wunderschönes Stricksetting: Ich sitze im Zug und die Landschaft zieht an mir vorbei. Wie meistens habe ich meinen iPod dabei und höre entweder Musik oder noch häufiger cast on (einen Strickpodcast). Das ist so unglaublich entspannend.


Ich bin außerdem jemand, der strickt (naja, eher fast stricken muss) wenn er vorm Fernseher sitzt. Das habe ich eindeutig von meiner Mutter. Wir sind beide recht hibbelig und einfach nur ruhig vor dem Fernseher sitzen, ohne irgendwas anderes zu tun, passiert uns recht selten. Allerdings gilt das für mich auch anders herum: wenn ich was stricken muss, sehe ich mir gern einen Film an, um mich dabei zu beschäftigen. Naja, quatschen und stricken ist dagegen eher schwer für mich, da ich meine Hände zum reden brauche. Es geht, aber ist nicht typisch. ;)

Something to aspire to./Anstreben


So after a lot of looking back this week, now is the time for looking into the future. Where will my skills be next year? As the old juggling proverb goes - you get good with what you practise. So I hope my designing skills will improve. Especially writing a pattern in an understandable way is still difficult for me. So I am deeply grateful for to my tech editor - she really has to work hard on my patterns.

I also dream about owning a knit dress for a long time now. So this might be something I try to tackle in the next twelvemonth. Perhaps even with the old knitting machine i got from my mum. Without the manual. So using the machine is someting I want to learn, too. And I'd love to be able to think up lace patterns from scratch. But I believe this is something that takes a little longer to learn. ;) But I'll defenitely be practising all this a lot!




Nach recht viel Rückblickendem diese Woche gibt es heute einen Ausblick. Worin möchte ich im nächsten Jahr besser werden? Um diese Frage zu beantworten, ziehe ich mal mein Lieblings(jonglier)sprichwort heran: Du wirst gut in dem, was Du übst. Ich hoffe also, dass meine Fähigkeiten Strickmuster zu schreiben sich deutlich verbessern werden. Denn meine Zahlen und Stichworte in verständliche Anweisungen zu übertragen ist immer noch anstrengend. Deshalb bin ich wirklich dankbar, dass jemand die Sachen genau gegenliest, redigiert und nachrechnet, das ist bei mir wirklich (noch) hart verdientes Geld. ;)


Außerdem träume ich schon viel zu lange davon ein Strickkleid zu haben. Das könnte vielleicht etwas sein, dass ich in den nächsten 12 Monaten schaffe. Eventuell sogar mit der alten Strickmaschine, die ich von meiner Mutter bekommen habe. Leider ohne Anleitung. Also steht das Erlernen der Bedienung dieses Maschinchens also auch auf der Liste... Ach ja, und so ganz grundsätzlich würde ich mir gern Durchbruchmuster komplett selbst ausdenken können. Aber der Lernprozess dauert wohl etwas länger. Womit wir wohl wieder beim Üben wären...ich geh dann mal stricken.

Where are they now? / Was macht eigentlich...?

Today the knitting and crochet blog week focusses on the question what happened to a crafted item. I'll focus on a crochet blanket today for a change. I made it during my summer holidays in 1998. Just before I moved out to study. I can still recall me crocheting it on the garden swing. It is a simple granny square pattern I found in an old crafting magazine from the 80s. I used up what leftovers I could find at home. The only wool I bought was the black acrylic it is crocheted together with.

Eine hübsche Rubrik, vielleicht behalte ich die bei. Denn heute geht es um die Geschichte eines Handarbeitstücks nach seiner Fertigstellung. Und um zu zeigen, dass ich nicht nur stricken kann, geht es um eine Häkeldecke. Ich habe sie in meinen Sommerferien 1998 gehäkelt, kurz bevor ich zu Hause ausgezogen bin. Ich sehe mich immer noch auf der Hollywoodschaukel meiner Eltern im Garten sitzen und fleißig häkeln. Das Muster hatte ich aus einer alten Handarbeitszeitung aus den 80ern und die Wolle war so ziemlich alles, was an Resten bei uns zu Hause rumlag. Die einzige Wolle, die dafür neu gekauft wurde war die schwarze Acrylwolle, mit der die Quadrate zusammen gehäkelt wurden.

It has been one of the very first things I put into my half of the room I shared in the dormitory in my first semester. It had the function of a bed spread then. The blanket moved with me ever since. Now it's lying on the sofa in the living room. There are a few small holes where it needs to be repaired (I guess I just didn't weave in ends properly all the time), but it is the blanket everybody reaches for if they need something to cuddle up in. And it's not the only blanket in the living room, of course...

Es war eine der ersten Sachen, die ich in meine Hälfte des Wohnheimzimmers brachte. Damals war sie ein prima Bettüberwurf. Seitdem ist die Decke oft mit mir umgezogen. Derzeit liegt sie brav auf der Couch im Wohnzimmer. Sie hat ein paar kleine Löcher bekommen (da habe ich wohl das eine oder andere Mal nicht richtig verstopft) und sollte mal repariert werden. Aber sie ist immer noch die Decke, nach der alle greifen, die etwas zum Kuscheln brauchen. Und sie ist nicht die einzige Decke, die griffbereit im Wohnzimmer liegt...

Knitting and Crochet Week - Day 3

Tidy mind, tidy stitches.

So, how do I organize my stash? So to begin with, I don't really have a knitting stash... I have leftovers from old projects. And to be frank, there is no organising that is worth mentioning. I put them in a big box and hope to be able to unearth the right ball in case there is a project I might use it up in or if I need it for small repairs. My knitting needles though are organised - I have quite a big stock especially of circulars as I got the old ones of my granny and an eldery neighbour of my parents. I keep them in a kind of folder seperated by needle size. Very handy and fast.

Hand aufs Herz, habe ich ein Ordnungssystem für mein Woll-Lager? Erstens, welches Woll-Lager? Ich habe kein Woll-Lager, sondern eher eine Sammlung von Resten. Und das wird von mir nicht geordnet sondern höchstens verstaut in der Hoffnung bestimmte Knäule im rechten Moment (wenn ich etwas reparieren möchte oder tatsächlich ein Projekt gefunden habe, in dem ich sie aufbrauchen kann) finde. Meine Stricknadeln haben allerdings System. Ich habe nämlich jede Menge (besonders Rundstricknadeln), die ich von meiner Oma und einer Nachbarin meiner Eltern bekommen habe. Die habe ich in einer Ordnungsmappe nach Nadelgröße geordnet. Ziemlich praktisch und leicht zu finden.

But I have to admit to having a fabric stash that is constantly growing. Most of it I keep in drawers next to my sewing table. There are some fabrics I prewashed and hope to use soon (read in a not determinable amount of months) that sit waiting on my old treadle sewing mashine. I thought this would prevent the setting of new folds and might motivate me a bit. It didn't work out quite as well as anticipated.

Was ich allerdings habe, ist ein inzwischen ziemlich konstant wachsendes Stoff-Lager. Das meiste davon habe ich in Schubladen neben meinem Nähtisch verstaut. (Es gibt aber auch noch etwas in einer Truhe und unter dem Bett und auf dem Schrank und... oh, habe ich vielleicht doch ein Problem!?) Ein besonders hübscher Kniff aus dem letzten Sommer oder Herbst war, die vorgewaschenen Stoffe einfach locker auf der alten Tretnähmaschine zu drapieren in der Hoffnung, dass sie dann nicht gleich wieder harte Falten vom Lagern bekommen und mich der Anblick vielleicht motiviert, sie rasch zu vernähen. Naja, immerhin hat es mich motiviert weniger Stoff zu kaufen. ;)

Knitting and Crochet Blog Week - Day 2

Skill +1UP

This time we all talk about one important skill in knitting or crochet, we learned last year. The knitting skill I learned that proved to be the most useful to me is a certain way to manipulate knit garments to fit me better. Namely: how to make horizontal short row darts. They are just wonderful. To be frank, it's been one of that d'oh moments. Especially as I know and use FBA's in sewing regularly and was aware ot and able to do short rows... It just never came into my mind that there might be something I could do about those rising front hems. But after reading about this technique on ravelry (love this site so much!) it has become a must. Because the stretch in knits doesn't solve every problem, heh! ;)

Heute gibt es mehr über die jeweilige (Lieblings-)technik zu lesen, die im letzten Jahr erworben wurde. Bei mir sind es ohne Fragen die "Brustabnäher durch verkürzte Reihen". Das war wirklich eine Offenbarung, obwohl eigentlich so offensichtlich. Das sollte es zumindest sein für jemanden, der beim Nähen die Schnitte jedes Mal anpasst und verkürzte Reihen stricken kann. Ich brauchte allerdings ravelry (ich liebe diese Seite) um drauf zu kommen. Und jetzt ist es ein Standard. So schnell kann das gehen. Die Dehnbarkeit von Strick löst nun mal leider nicht jedes Problem, grins. ;)

Welcome to 2nd annual Knitting and Crochet Blog Week!

As announced in the sidebar, I'm partaking in yet another blogging event. This time it's only one week long and concentrates on the fiber related themes (that sometimes do get forgotten a bit in favor of the sewing).

Wie schon in der Seitenleiste seit einiger Zeit angekündigt, nehme ich diese Woche an einem weiteren Blog-Event teil, dieses Mal ist es eher etwas strick- und häkellastig. Heute an Tag 1 geht es um das Thema: "Die Geschichte zweier Garne".

So this is day 1 (2KCBWDAY1) and todays theme is: "A Tale of Two Yarns".

It was the best of yarns, it was the worst of yarns... sorry, couldn't let this pass. Actually I'm going to talk about two yarns that are almost the same and both much beloved by me.

I'm talking about the Merino yarns of Zitron - ecco & Lifestyle - which are two of the most trustworthy yarns I know. Next to no pilling, good stitch definition, nice feel and a gorgeous colour line. It's so nice to work with them, there also is no splitting like with Lang Merino+. They are a good yarn for cables, which I adore. The only difference is in weight, ecco being a DK and Lifestyle being a Sport weight yarn. But let's let the pictures do the talking.

Und um welche zwei Garne wird es da wohl gehen? Ganz einfach, um die von mir in letzter Zeit meistgenutzten, nämlich die beiden Merinogarne ecco & Lifestyle von Zitron. Ich mag beide Garne einfach total gern, weil sie super Eigenschaften wie geringe Knötchenbildung, kein Spalten, angenehmes Tragegefühl und eine großartige Farbpalette verbinden. Außerdem eigenen sie sich großartig für Zopfmuster. Sie unterscheiden sich praktisch hauptsächlich in der Lauflänge/Dicke, wobei ecco die dickere Version ist. Aber nun zu den Stücken, zu denen dieses Garn in den letzten 1,5 Jahren bei mir geworden ist:
