Hi, I'm still alive. I've been very busy these last two weeks with moving this blog to my own website. So from today on you will find all my new and also all my blogging at http://herrlichkeiten.net.

To welcome you in the new place in style, I have been working on a little present: my new "Walking On..." sock pattern will be available as a free download there for the first month. So what are you waiting for?! ;)

Hallo, da bin ich wieder. Während der letzten beiden Wochen war ich sehr mit dem Umzug dieses Blogs auf meine eigene Website beschäftigt. Ab sofort findet Ihr alle meine neuen und auch alle alten Blogeinträge unter http://herrlichkeiten.net.

Um Euch den Umzug zu versüßen, habe ich außerdem an einem Strickmuster gearbeitet, dass es auf der neuen Seite einen Monat lang zum kostenlosen download gibt: "Walking On..." Socken. Also nichts wie rübergestiefelt zur neuen Adresse. :)

Still alive

...but busy as hell. The past week flew by filled with work so there isn't any progress to show you. Ok, perhaps I finished something small. And colourful. And knitted. But more on this soon.

Ich lebe noch, auch wenn ich grad unglaublich viel zu tun habe. Arbeit und andere vollkommen unspektakuläre Sachen, nichts Vorzeigbares. Obwohl, was Kleines habe ich fertig bekommen. Es ist bunt und gestrickt. Aber mehr wird erstmal nicht verraten.

Jeans

The weather is finally reaching temperatures again that are jeans appropriate. So I go back to the idea of last autumn: sewing myself a pair. As you may recall the fabric for them has been already bought and prewashed. I finally also bought a copy of "Pants for any Body". After the first read I realised that I could use any pattern that comes close to what I want and then just alter it to fit me. After fitting a pattern once, I'm able to perform the same alterations on any other pants/trousers pattern and it's going to fit! (Different fabric will of course result in different fits...) But this is their theory in a nutshell. It's basicly the same aproach like doing a Full Bust Alteration (FBA) in the same dimensions by now on all of my sewing patterns. Just a bit more complex ;). I love it when instructions enable me to understand a process and make it more accessible. :)

Da die Temperaturen sich hier inzwischen wieder in einem Bereich bewegen, der für mich durchaus Jeanswürdig ist, habe ich beschlossen mich wieder einer Idee zu widmen, die ich im letzten Herbst hatte: mir eine Jeans zu nähen. Vielleicht erinnert sich ja der eine oder andere, ich hatte sogar schon den Stoff gekauft und vorgewaschen. Außerdem habe ich mir endlich eine Ausgabe von "Pants for any Body" besorgt. Nach dem ersten Lesen kam ich zu dem Schluss, dass ich mir einfach irgendein Schnittmuster, das mir gefällt schnappen könnte und mit Hilfe dieses Buchs anpassen kann. Und die ganze Arbeit wäre sogar eine gute Investition in die Zukunft, da ich die Änderung einfach bei jedem anderen Hosenschnitt in Zukunft machen könnte und er wird passen. (Naja, innerhalb der üblichen Schwankungen durch Stoff etc). Zumindest ist das ganz vereinfacht das Versprechen des Büchleins. Praktisch so, wie wenn ich bei jedem Oberteil immer erstmal dieselbe FBA (Weitenzugabe am Brustumfang) mache bevor ich anfange, nur komplexer ;). Ich liebe es, wenn mich Anleitungen dazu bringen, Prozesse zu verstehen und nicht einfach nur zu befolgen.

The pattern I have choosen from my big stash of burda magazines: burda 8/2009 Mod.106. Unfortunately burda doesn't do jeans patterns very frequently. So I decided on the leg-fit which I wanted to achieve. Like so often in burda magazines this pattern is used once more in the magazine, this time for wool trousers, so I'm unsure if it will have a tight jeans fit on the crotch... We will see. The pattern is traced (in my hip-size, first thing I learned from the book) and the fun will start soon.

Das Schnittmuster, für das ich mich entschieden habe: burda 8/2009 Mod.106. Ich bin einfach mal meinen großen Stapel von burda Magazinen durchgegangen. Allerdings gibt es da nur selten Schnittmuster für Jeans, also war ich nicht zu wählerisch und habe mich aufgrund der Beinweite entschieden. Dieser Schnitt ist übrigens in üblicher burda-Manier noch einmal im Heft vernäht - als klassische Wollhose. Mal sehen, ob sie da überhaupt so knackig sitzt, wie es eine Jeans sollte. Wir werden es sehen. Der Schnitt ist auf alle Fälle schon mal vom Schnittmusterbogen kopiert (in der Größe meiner Hüftweite, schon was gelernt) und es kann dann bald losgehen.

Me-Made-March: ich war dabei!

I know it's already April, but I have one last post about Me-Made-March. A month long putting the way you clothe yourself under a magnifying glass deserves a conclusion. So here it is after a short delay because of the intense blogging for Knitting and Crochet Blog Week.
I made a big step forward with taking the pictures. I have become much more comfortable in front of the camera. One thing that helped was finding a routine again. But even more I think it's the frequency. This has been the second month I took pictures of me on a daily basis, then there are also the pictures for this blog and the knitting patterns. It makes taking photos less akward - and if I had a really bad day I just chopped off my head (on the picture that is). What hasn't changed was that taking photos was a hard task in the beginning but I took one on the first of the next month because I got so used to it. So this won't put me off Me-Made-May.

Me-Made-May - yes, I'm already planning for Me-Made-May. I think I'm going to put the callenge the other way around. I'm going to allow a certain amount of items that are not me made. The rest/main part of my outfit has to be me made. This has been a thing that was scaring me before last month. But during this month I realised it's the way I think by now. I'm not much intrigued by ready to wear anymore. I don't want to buy, I want to sew and knit. And as I'm going to be allowing myself store bought stuff, it doesn't feel like I'll have to sew up things I already own "just because". I'm already looking forward to it :) especially to a week in France inbetween.

Es ist zwar inzwischen schon wieder April, aber einen Post zum Thema Me-Made-March hätte ich noch... schließlich hat so ein Monat geänderter Kleidungsgewohnheiten schon ein Fazit verdient. Und letzte Woche war ich zu sehr mit dem Posten für die Knitting und Crochet Blog Week beschäftigt.
Ein großer Fortschritt zuerst: dieses Mal fiel mir das Fotografieren sehr viel leichter. Es ist vor allem dann wieder einfacher geworden, als ich eine neue Routine gefunden habe. Und die Häufigkeit macht es einfacher nicht komplett bescheuert auszusehen (bzw. einfach an ganz miesen Tagen den Kopf abschneiden - also auf dem Foto.) Es war ja schon der zweite Monat, an dem ich an praktisch jedem Tag ein Foto von mir machte. Und dieses Mal habe ich, wenn ich mich nicht irre, nur ein, zwei Tage vergessen. Dafür habe ich wieder mal am 1. des nächsten Monats erst nach dem Foto bemerkt, dass ich es gar nicht mehr machen "musste". Außerdem dokumentiere ich ja fleißig für den Blog und mache Fotos für die Strickmuster. Für den Me-Made-May fühle ich mich an dieser Front also gewappnet.

Hmm, Me-Made-May...ich denke, ich werde meine Selbstverpflichtung dann das erste Mal anders herum formulieren. Das heißt, ich werde nicht davon ausgehen, dass gekaufte Kleidung den Hauptteil meiner Garderobe bildet und ich einige Teile durch selbst gemachtes ersetze, sondern die selbst gemachten Stücke sind gegeben und ich erlaube mir einen bestimmten Anteil gekaufter Teile. Der vergangene Monat hat mir in diesem Punkt gezeigt, dass ich mir damit nichts verbiete oder mich unnötiger Weise einschränke, im Gegenteil. Besonders interessant wird es, wenn ich dann Ende Mai in den Urlaub fahre. :)

Knitting and Crochet time / Zeit zu Stricken


While this post gets published I'm enjoying some of my favorite knitting times and surroundings: I sit in a train and watch the landscape flying by. It's really wonderful and peaceful. Usually I have my iPod with me and listen to music or even more often to cast on. Brendy Dayne's soothing voice is relaxing on it's own. Combined it's crafting heaven.


I'm also guilty of being a TV knitter. It's something I inherited from my mum. We are both rather restless and just sitting in front of a tv and not doing anything else is seldom heard of. It also works the other way around, if I have to finish a knit, I watch a film to keep me in the mood. Although it is also lovely to chat to someone while knitting, I find it rather difficult, as I use my hands a lot while talking. I'm able to do it, it's just not me. ;)

Während dieser Post online erscheint, bin ich weit weg von meinem Computer und freue mich über ein wunderschönes Stricksetting: Ich sitze im Zug und die Landschaft zieht an mir vorbei. Wie meistens habe ich meinen iPod dabei und höre entweder Musik oder noch häufiger cast on (einen Strickpodcast). Das ist so unglaublich entspannend.


Ich bin außerdem jemand, der strickt (naja, eher fast stricken muss) wenn er vorm Fernseher sitzt. Das habe ich eindeutig von meiner Mutter. Wir sind beide recht hibbelig und einfach nur ruhig vor dem Fernseher sitzen, ohne irgendwas anderes zu tun, passiert uns recht selten. Allerdings gilt das für mich auch anders herum: wenn ich was stricken muss, sehe ich mir gern einen Film an, um mich dabei zu beschäftigen. Naja, quatschen und stricken ist dagegen eher schwer für mich, da ich meine Hände zum reden brauche. Es geht, aber ist nicht typisch. ;)

Knitting and Crochet Blog Week - Day 6

Something to aspire to./Anstreben


So after a lot of looking back this week, now is the time for looking into the future. Where will my skills be next year? As the old juggling proverb goes - you get good with what you practise. So I hope my designing skills will improve. Especially writing a pattern in an understandable way is still difficult for me. So I am deeply grateful for to my tech editor - she really has to work hard on my patterns.

I also dream about owning a knit dress for a long time now. So this might be something I try to tackle in the next twelvemonth. Perhaps even with the old knitting machine i got from my mum. Without the manual. So using the machine is someting I want to learn, too. And I'd love to be able to think up lace patterns from scratch. But I believe this is something that takes a little longer to learn. ;) But I'll defenitely be practising all this a lot!




Nach recht viel Rückblickendem diese Woche gibt es heute einen Ausblick. Worin möchte ich im nächsten Jahr besser werden? Um diese Frage zu beantworten, ziehe ich mal mein Lieblings(jonglier)sprichwort heran: Du wirst gut in dem, was Du übst. Ich hoffe also, dass meine Fähigkeiten Strickmuster zu schreiben sich deutlich verbessern werden. Denn meine Zahlen und Stichworte in verständliche Anweisungen zu übertragen ist immer noch anstrengend. Deshalb bin ich wirklich dankbar, dass jemand die Sachen genau gegenliest, redigiert und nachrechnet, das ist bei mir wirklich (noch) hart verdientes Geld. ;)


Außerdem träume ich schon viel zu lange davon ein Strickkleid zu haben. Das könnte vielleicht etwas sein, dass ich in den nächsten 12 Monaten schaffe. Eventuell sogar mit der alten Strickmaschine, die ich von meiner Mutter bekommen habe. Leider ohne Anleitung. Also steht das Erlernen der Bedienung dieses Maschinchens also auch auf der Liste... Ach ja, und so ganz grundsätzlich würde ich mir gern Durchbruchmuster komplett selbst ausdenken können. Aber der Lernprozess dauert wohl etwas länger. Womit wir wohl wieder beim Üben wären...ich geh dann mal stricken.

Knitting and Crochet Blog Week - Day 4

Where are they now? / Was macht eigentlich...?

Today the knitting and crochet blog week focusses on the question what happened to a crafted item. I'll focus on a crochet blanket today for a change. I made it during my summer holidays in 1998. Just before I moved out to study. I can still recall me crocheting it on the garden swing. It is a simple granny square pattern I found in an old crafting magazine from the 80s. I used up what leftovers I could find at home. The only wool I bought was the black acrylic it is crocheted together with.

Eine hübsche Rubrik, vielleicht behalte ich die bei. Denn heute geht es um die Geschichte eines Handarbeitstücks nach seiner Fertigstellung. Und um zu zeigen, dass ich nicht nur stricken kann, geht es um eine Häkeldecke. Ich habe sie in meinen Sommerferien 1998 gehäkelt, kurz bevor ich zu Hause ausgezogen bin. Ich sehe mich immer noch auf der Hollywoodschaukel meiner Eltern im Garten sitzen und fleißig häkeln. Das Muster hatte ich aus einer alten Handarbeitszeitung aus den 80ern und die Wolle war so ziemlich alles, was an Resten bei uns zu Hause rumlag. Die einzige Wolle, die dafür neu gekauft wurde war die schwarze Acrylwolle, mit der die Quadrate zusammen gehäkelt wurden.

It has been one of the very first things I put into my half of the room I shared in the dormitory in my first semester. It had the function of a bed spread then. The blanket moved with me ever since. Now it's lying on the sofa in the living room. There are a few small holes where it needs to be repaired (I guess I just didn't weave in ends properly all the time), but it is the blanket everybody reaches for if they need something to cuddle up in. And it's not the only blanket in the living room, of course...

Es war eine der ersten Sachen, die ich in meine Hälfte des Wohnheimzimmers brachte. Damals war sie ein prima Bettüberwurf. Seitdem ist die Decke oft mit mir umgezogen. Derzeit liegt sie brav auf der Couch im Wohnzimmer. Sie hat ein paar kleine Löcher bekommen (da habe ich wohl das eine oder andere Mal nicht richtig verstopft) und sollte mal repariert werden. Aber sie ist immer noch die Decke, nach der alle greifen, die etwas zum Kuscheln brauchen. Und sie ist nicht die einzige Decke, die griffbereit im Wohnzimmer liegt...

Knitting and Crochet Week - Day 3

Tidy mind, tidy stitches.

So, how do I organize my stash? So to begin with, I don't really have a knitting stash... I have leftovers from old projects. And to be frank, there is no organising that is worth mentioning. I put them in a big box and hope to be able to unearth the right ball in case there is a project I might use it up in or if I need it for small repairs. My knitting needles though are organised - I have quite a big stock especially of circulars as I got the old ones of my granny and an eldery neighbour of my parents. I keep them in a kind of folder seperated by needle size. Very handy and fast.

Hand aufs Herz, habe ich ein Ordnungssystem für mein Woll-Lager? Erstens, welches Woll-Lager? Ich habe kein Woll-Lager, sondern eher eine Sammlung von Resten. Und das wird von mir nicht geordnet sondern höchstens verstaut in der Hoffnung bestimmte Knäule im rechten Moment (wenn ich etwas reparieren möchte oder tatsächlich ein Projekt gefunden habe, in dem ich sie aufbrauchen kann) finde. Meine Stricknadeln haben allerdings System. Ich habe nämlich jede Menge (besonders Rundstricknadeln), die ich von meiner Oma und einer Nachbarin meiner Eltern bekommen habe. Die habe ich in einer Ordnungsmappe nach Nadelgröße geordnet. Ziemlich praktisch und leicht zu finden.

But I have to admit to having a fabric stash that is constantly growing. Most of it I keep in drawers next to my sewing table. There are some fabrics I prewashed and hope to use soon (read in a not determinable amount of months) that sit waiting on my old treadle sewing mashine. I thought this would prevent the setting of new folds and might motivate me a bit. It didn't work out quite as well as anticipated.

Was ich allerdings habe, ist ein inzwischen ziemlich konstant wachsendes Stoff-Lager. Das meiste davon habe ich in Schubladen neben meinem Nähtisch verstaut. (Es gibt aber auch noch etwas in einer Truhe und unter dem Bett und auf dem Schrank und... oh, habe ich vielleicht doch ein Problem!?) Ein besonders hübscher Kniff aus dem letzten Sommer oder Herbst war, die vorgewaschenen Stoffe einfach locker auf der alten Tretnähmaschine zu drapieren in der Hoffnung, dass sie dann nicht gleich wieder harte Falten vom Lagern bekommen und mich der Anblick vielleicht motiviert, sie rasch zu vernähen. Naja, immerhin hat es mich motiviert weniger Stoff zu kaufen. ;)

Knitting and Crochet Blog Week - Day 2

Skill +1UP

This time we all talk about one important skill in knitting or crochet, we learned last year. The knitting skill I learned that proved to be the most useful to me is a certain way to manipulate knit garments to fit me better. Namely: how to make horizontal short row darts. They are just wonderful. To be frank, it's been one of that d'oh moments. Especially as I know and use FBA's in sewing regularly and was aware ot and able to do short rows... It just never came into my mind that there might be something I could do about those rising front hems. But after reading about this technique on ravelry (love this site so much!) it has become a must. Because the stretch in knits doesn't solve every problem, heh! ;)

Heute gibt es mehr über die jeweilige (Lieblings-)technik zu lesen, die im letzten Jahr erworben wurde. Bei mir sind es ohne Fragen die "Brustabnäher durch verkürzte Reihen". Das war wirklich eine Offenbarung, obwohl eigentlich so offensichtlich. Das sollte es zumindest sein für jemanden, der beim Nähen die Schnitte jedes Mal anpasst und verkürzte Reihen stricken kann. Ich brauchte allerdings ravelry (ich liebe diese Seite) um drauf zu kommen. Und jetzt ist es ein Standard. So schnell kann das gehen. Die Dehnbarkeit von Strick löst nun mal leider nicht jedes Problem, grins. ;)

Welcome to 2nd annual Knitting and Crochet Blog Week!

As announced in the sidebar, I'm partaking in yet another blogging event. This time it's only one week long and concentrates on the fiber related themes (that sometimes do get forgotten a bit in favor of the sewing).

Wie schon in der Seitenleiste seit einiger Zeit angekündigt, nehme ich diese Woche an einem weiteren Blog-Event teil, dieses Mal ist es eher etwas strick- und häkellastig. Heute an Tag 1 geht es um das Thema: "Die Geschichte zweier Garne".

So this is day 1 (2KCBWDAY1) and todays theme is: "A Tale of Two Yarns".

It was the best of yarns, it was the worst of yarns... sorry, couldn't let this pass. Actually I'm going to talk about two yarns that are almost the same and both much beloved by me.

I'm talking about the Merino yarns of Zitron - ecco & Lifestyle - which are two of the most trustworthy yarns I know. Next to no pilling, good stitch definition, nice feel and a gorgeous colour line. It's so nice to work with them, there also is no splitting like with Lang Merino+. They are a good yarn for cables, which I adore. The only difference is in weight, ecco being a DK and Lifestyle being a Sport weight yarn. But let's let the pictures do the talking.

Und um welche zwei Garne wird es da wohl gehen? Ganz einfach, um die von mir in letzter Zeit meistgenutzten, nämlich die beiden Merinogarne ecco & Lifestyle von Zitron. Ich mag beide Garne einfach total gern, weil sie super Eigenschaften wie geringe Knötchenbildung, kein Spalten, angenehmes Tragegefühl und eine großartige Farbpalette verbinden. Außerdem eigenen sie sich großartig für Zopfmuster. Sie unterscheiden sich praktisch hauptsächlich in der Lauflänge/Dicke, wobei ecco die dickere Version ist. Aber nun zu den Stücken, zu denen dieses Garn in den letzten 1,5 Jahren bei mir geworden ist:

Frühlingsgefühle

Finally I find the time to da a post on my wardrobe plans for spring. After Colette Patterns sparked the fire on spring palettes this is much on my mind and as it seems on many other bloggers minds, too.

My colours this spring are navy, red and off-white.

The items are (in order of need): underwear, jeans, jacket/blazer, matching skirt, top. This is a very ambitioned plan, because as you know me perhaps a little by now, I'm not one for the big output. At least I finished alredy a knit top that fits in there really well. And there are 4 panties waiting to get the elastic attached and then they'd be finished, too. The fabric for the rest is sitting around prewashed since autumn, so I hope I will be a good girl and have a couple of new pieces to add to my travel luggage in late may...

Endlich komme ich mal zu meinem Frühlingspost. Nachdem bei Colette Patterns Frühlingspaletten und Nähprojekte noch und nöcher zu sehen waren, habe ich auch einen Plan beizusteuern.

Meine Farben für dieses Frühjahr sind marine, rot und eierschale. Verteilt auf folgende Kleidungsstücke (in Reihenfolge der Dringlichkeit): Unterwäsche, Jeans, Jacke/Blazer, passender Rock und (mindestens) ein Oberteil. Ein Oberteil habe ich schon fertig gestrickt und an 4 Unterhosen fehlt nur noch der Gummi. Das heißt, obwohl das für jemanden mit einem so geringen Output wie mich eine sehr ambitionierte Liste ist, könnte ich das vielleicht sogar schaffen. Immerhin habe ich auch schon alle Stoffe und die sind sogar vorgewaschen. Also hoffe ich mal das beste für neue Teile in meinem Reiserucksack Ende Mai...

Gardening

The knitting pattern for my gardening cardigan is finally available for download! This cosy cardigan helps to show off your curves with cables that integrate the shaping. It is worked in one piece featuring set-in short row sleeves that are knit in the round. A little positive ease (2.5cm/1“) brings out the cables and braids without being restraining. To make sure the fit is great this cardigan is sized in 5cm/2“ steps. The cables and braids are charted. There are also instructions for optional bust darts included.

Suitable for intermediate to advanced knitters.

Sizes: 32(34,36,38,40,42)“/82(87,92,97,102,107)cm bust circumference, 2,5cm/1“ positive ease.

Gauge: 20 sts x 30 rows = 10 x 10cm/4 x 4“ in stockinette stitch.

Pattern Stitches: reverse stockinette; cables and braids (charted).

Yarn: approx. 9 (9,10,10,11,12) balls of Zitron Ecco, 100% Merino, 111m(121yds)/50g DK yarn;

It has been worn on saturday night for cocktails and dancing for the first time. And got me a lot of compliments. I will definitely wear it again - I love it. Due to the bright colours I think it will become my go to dress to brighten up the nights or dull days. In sunlight it's a bit to much for my taste...

Ich habe es am Samstag Nacht das erste Mal getragen um Cocktails zu schlürfen und zu tanzen. Es hat mir ne Menge Komplimente beschert. Ich werde es bestimmt noch oft tragen! Ich denke dank der knalligen Farben wird es eher mein neuer Stimmungsaufheller an dunklen Tagen und ein Farbtupfer am Abend. Denn in der hellen Mittagssonne wirken die Farben dann doch etwas extrem für meinen Geschmack...

Me-Made-March 15.-20. März

A lot of days, but very few pictures first due to bad weather and second due to a busy weekend. While failing at taking pictures I kept on with my pledge to wear at least 3 me made pieces a day.

Innenansicht

The dress is quickly coming together. Even though I finish every seam with bias tape. This has proven a very good decision. Not only because I really like the look but also becase the fabric is ravelling like hell while working with it. So I'm happy to have all the seam allowances closed nice and safe. Here is a little sneak peak inside:

Das Kleid geht jetzt ziemlich schnell voran. Und das obwohl ich alle Nähte mit Schrägband versäubere. Das hat sich übrigens noch als verdammt gute Idee herausgestellt. Nicht nur, weil mir der Anblick wirklich gut gefällt, sondern auch weil der Stoff ohne Ende fusselt. Deshalb bin ich froh so langsam alle Nahtzugaben hübsch und sicher verpackt zu haben. Und so sieht das von innen aus:

As you can see, the inner collar has still to be sewn on (invisibly by hand, not by mashine like the instructions say). The other thing you can't see on the picture: it has to be hemmed, too. I hope I can finish all this tonight as I want to wear the dress on the weekend to a birthday party.

Wie man sehr gut sehen kann, muss ich noch den inneren Stehkragen annähen (unsichtbar von Hand, nicht mit der Maschine, wie die Anleitung das vorschlägt). Ansonsten, aber das verbirgt das Foto natürlich, fehlt noch der Saum. Ich hoffe, das schaffe ich alles noch heute Abend, denn ich möchte das Kleid gern am Wochenende zu einer Party anziehen.
